Synopsis
The acquisition of phonemes is one of many processes a child must master simultaneously during early language acquisition. This work explores the significance of consonant phonemes for the development of lexical concepts in first language acquisition using German as an example. The results point to an acquisition of the processing advantage of consonants (consonant bias) depending on the first language (e.g German or French). As children experience their vocabulary spurt during their second year of life, this investigation focusses on the ages 16 to 31 months.
